John Tillotson

John Tillotson, Archbishop of Canterbury


John Tillotson (1630-1694), a probable second cousin of John Tillotson the emigrant to Massachusetts, officiated as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1691 until his death. He was famous for his sermons and writings which became very popular with American colonists. Tillotson was also a favorite of William and Mary. He was instrumental in James Blair's reception of a charter to establish the College of William and Mary.
