My father learned self-defense techniques in the army. My mother learned Savate, a French form of kick-boxing, as a girl in France.
I studied Judo for a number of years as a boy (see picture). At age seventeen I suffered a fracture of my lower spine at the coccyx along with crushed spinal discs. Because of these injuries I did not participate in Judo again. I continue to be interested in Judo and other martial arts sports. Several of my friends and acquaintances practice Aikido, JuJitsu, Karate, or Tae Kwon Do.
During the years I competed actively in Judo, my favorite techniques included tai-otoshi, seoi-otoshi, and hiza-guruma. I won most all of my contest matches using one of those throws.
