My aunt Grace Evelyn Burns was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 6, 1909 to John Michael Burns and Eva Josephine Tillotson.
Grace attended St. Mel grammar school and Austin High School. She did not finish college although she did accumulate about two years worth of credits. Her father was forced to retire early from his position with Western Electric, so Grace, like her sister Marn, started working to provide for the family. Grace's first full-time job was at Western Electric Company. Later she worked for the Chicago Park District. She retired from the Park District after thirty seven years. Grace was also a Notary Public.
Grace studied piano for many years and became an accomplished pianist. She continued to play until well into old age. Grace played regularly at family gatherings, from folksy tunes like "Turkey in the Straw" to more challenging classical works like Chopin polonaises and works by Schubert and Mendelsohn.
In the Spring of 2001 Grace fell, breaking a hip and arm. As so often happens when elderly people sustain such an injury, she was unable to recover. Grace died early Sunday morning on September 9, 2001. She is buried on September 11, 2001 next to her parents and her sister Marn in Queen of Heaven cemetery in Hillside, Illinois.
